the morning after: a couple more thoughts

Just a few random things that come to mind:

1. Not to bite the Hammer that feeds me -- it was nice of them to serve the stuff for free to racers at the event and all -- but I've got to say that Recoverite tastes just awful. And no recovery drink will help you recover if it's so vile you can't drink it. (After my experiment with Heed last year I should've known better...)

2. Several friends with Team Beer asked me if this meant I was going to race 'cross. (After all, short-track was supposed to be a sort of test-run to see if I could race 'cross in the fall. I hadn't planned on enjoying it for its own sake.) I feel less sure about 'cross just now, not only because of my lack of conditioning, but because I cannot bring myself to risk injury by using clipless technology and I just KNOW I'll need shoes with cleats to do run-ups in the mud. So right now I'm not sure.

3. Last night I told Sweetie that, if money were no object, I'd really want to join a gym and work with a sports trainer to gain some conditioing -- and to learn a routine to building and maintaining it. Coming from a family of non-athletes and having NO clear personal athletic history myself, I can see that I'd benefit from having someplace to go every few days to work out with others in a structured group atmosphere. (I do well with structure, especially in the learning phase.) There's a sports-oriented gym near home that handed out intro literature at Sunday Parkways. I'm intrigued, but money's a little tight. Still, it's worth a trip to just check it out, especially if I'm serious about wanting to race 'cross in the fall. I might go and check it out this weekend.

4. I am not signed up to race again until July 20. I didn't sign up for the 6th because that's my vacation with Sweetie; I could race again on the 13th but with another Sunday Parkways the day before my next race on the 20th it made sense to take it easy the week leading into that. If nothing else, I might go out that night to volunteer and watch a little. So I have some time to just ride, rest, stretch  and putter for a couple of weeks.

Still glad I raced last night. Even though it was so much harder. Still can't explain it. Huh.
