Kent Peterson (http://kentsbike.blogspot.com/) is visiting Portland and he's crashed at my place. Tomorrow he'll leave at oh-dark-thirty to continue his trip, a bike advocacy tour of Washington state. It was nice to finally meet him in person. He's charming, talkative and knowledgable about bikes and lots of other stuff. Although Portland is out of his area of "jurisdiction" -- he works for Bike Alliance of Washington and they sent him on the trip -- we couldn't let him get this close to Portland without a quick visit.

I had the fun of being a sort of tour guide while we made our way from my place to Clever Cycles (http://clevercycles.com/), a Dutch bicycle importer where Kent and an interview scheduled with Jonathan of BikePortland fame. En route I tried to give Kent a little history of the neighborhoods we were riding through, and took him down Sabin Hill for a nice little burst of downhill coasting. Along the way there and back I made quick little stops for us at Community Cycling Center and Citybikes. During kent's interview with Jonathan I had the pleasure of getting acquainted with Todd and Martina, the husband and wife owners of the business. Martina and I talked about bike clothing, and Todd invited me to test-ride one of the Bakfiets (Cargo bikes) parked out front. It ook it up and down the block and was amazed at how quickly I picked it up. Then Todd invited me to go for a ride in the cargo box while he pedaled. Fantastic, great fun.
We had to get moving in order to make the dinner potluck Pal Michael had set up at Joel's house. It was a lovely, mellow time. Sweetie came by for a little while, enjoyed Joel's urban chickens and garden, chatted with us awhile, then saw all the carbs and knew she'd have to go home to eat some vegetables. ("I should have known this would be carb-heavy with all the randonneurs here," she quipped.)

It was a great evening that had to end too soon. Kent was a little tired and needed to get to bed so he can get up super-early in the morning. We went home and set him up for an early night's sleep. And now it's my turn to turn in as well.
