blogiversary, part two

Now, for the blogiversary part: I started keeping a blog a year ago, not long after getting this 12-year-old Mac computer as a gift. I have enjoyed the process, learned a few things along the way, and still have lots of computeristic questions that I barely know how to ask, let alone find answers to.

In no particular order:

1. Friends of mine with LJ's and other blogs seem to be able to create links, where someone will be referenced by name or blog moniker and, simply by clicking on their name you can be taken to their blog. For me to reference someone else's blog I have to manually type in the actual http-thing (the address), and it shows up in my finalized blog entry. Clicking on the address will still get you to the other person's blog or website, but it's cumbersome and I wish I knew how to do it this other way.

2. I wish that my friends with Blogspot and Blogger accounts could accept comments from non Blogspot-users. Some do, some can't. Not sure how or why. (I will note that I tried starting with another blog-company and being highly frustrated before discovering LJ. In spite of all the manual stuff I seem to have to resort to, posting entries and photos IS pretty easy and I am grateful for that. So I remain at LJ. Thanks Mister Goat!

3. I have discovered that doing photography without film is a gas. Unfortunately, my pencam has been a mixed bag. I like the size, ease of use and lack of worry over destroying such a "lesser" camera (it cost four bucks for a refurbished model, and if I sit on it and break it I won't cry). But downloading doesn't always happen. Sometimes I lose photos I took because the cord simply won't act like it's really connected with the darned camera, or with my computer. To be fair, I was warned about the finicky cord by other pen-cam users, so while I get frustrated at times it's never enough to stomp my feet and throw things. Maybe later on I'll work with a fancier camera and solve these issues. Or I'll keep on being my cheap-ass self and carry on with what I've got. I dunno.

4. I tried to understand RSS and live-feed. I did. Friends told me about it, and gave me websites to visit and learn. It's too technical for me. Made my head spin. Technology I cannot touch has always posed problems for me. If you ask my sister she'll tell you it's because I'm a visual and tactile kind of learner. I CAN learn from books, and do; but OH! the sweat and patience required. I also tried to understand "open source" (a couple of my friends post responses to my blog with some kind of open source address) but based on what I've seen so far that is for absolute Computer Grown-Ups, which I am so totally NOT.

So I continue to plug along on my mostly-merry, manual way.

Any answers to these queries should be put into as plain an English as possible. You'll be responding to someone who is still figuring out the toolbar in Word.
Thanks for reading.

Let's make a date, and we'll go over some simple things you can do to make links until they are nearly second nature to you.
Really? That'd be so cool! Thank you.

1. You may be mixing apples and oranges here. Will need more specific info to advise on that one.

2. That is controlled by the person who set up the Blogger blog so not much you can do about it.

3. Since the pencam has to be made to work with the mac, you are flirting with cutting edge technology (sort of). That means sometimes you bleed. You can get a camera or a card reader that plugs into your USB port and the photos go right into iphoto without a problem. (I hope your Mac is not too old to have a USB port. If it is, someone will have to add a special card to it, but I digress.) Someone was offering a 3 megapixel (I think) digital camera on i-BOB if you paid the shipping. Snap something like that up or just get yourself something for nearly free. I still use a 2 megapixel camera which works great but its value on the open market is nearly zero now. Use all this techno-lust our society has to the advantage of your pocketbook.

4. Glad the RSS worked for you. I created a folder in Safari bookmarks named "Daily RSS" which I put blogs like yours in. I love getting the notifications without having to check all the blogs one by one.

Keep writing and enjoying the web. I have made it a point to cut back on my tech education. I now only learn only what I need, when I need it, because the stuff is mostly temporary and I don't want to clog my head with it. New rules for new times, I guess.

Take care,
Perry
Itai -- you sent me this same reply five times. (I deleted the first four.) What's up with your return key?

Ooooh! Oooooh! Can I answer number 1?

Hey there Beth -

There's a little bit of "magic of the interface" getting in your way.... lemme 'splain:

When you are posting in an entry, and use the magic phrase "http://" as part of a line, LJ (other blogware and most email programs) realizes you want to make a link and does the necessary black box magic to make it happen.

What that means is that you've typed the TEXT "http://www.yaddayaddayadda.org" and LJ has created a LINK to the same thing, which is what your browser reacts to. If you can realize they are two separate things, you're 90% of the way up the hill...

So, let's assume what you want to do is have the TEXT "yadda" link to www.yaddayaddayadda.org. (it may help to print this out and use it as a steps list):

1 - type merrily away -
Oooh, so we're oover at ARby's, don't cha know, and this nice young man over at the salad bar was talking about a web site called yadda

2 - stop typing -

3 - HIGHLIGHT* the word you want to link

4 - Up at the top of the LJ post window is an icon which looks like a little globe with a chain link attached to it. This creates a LINK to the TEXT you just highlighted. With the word still highlighted, click on the Globe "LINK" icon.

5 - A separate window will appear. Type in the full link that you want to send people to. In this case, it would be "www.yaddayaddayadda.org" (without the quotes). Notice that the separate window provides the "http://" stuff, so you don't need to type that in.

6 - Then click the "OK" button, and the separate window will disappear, and you should now have a working LINK to the TEXT that you typed.

7 - Go back to typing, adding TEXT-based LINKS as you see fit.

Extra Credit -
2 refinements:

1 - you can double-click on a word to highlight it.

2 - If I'm linking more than one or two things, I'll open a second browser window (Apple+N, or Apple+T to make this happen, or it's under the FILE menu at the top of your screen.) That way, I can use the second browser window to find the exact web address (or what folks call the URL). Then I'll COPY the address and PASTE it into the LINK window, rather than rely upon my typing.

Hope that helps - let me know if anything is unclear.

all the best,

-- Jim

*Highlight - with the mouse, position the pointer at the front of the word, click down and hold the mouse, then drag the mouse through the word, stopping when you reach the end of the word. Release the mouse. The word should have a "highlight" color, indicating that you've selected that word.

Re: Ooooh! Oooooh! Can I answer number 1?

Jim -- I'm sure this will all make sense. But since I'm a visual gal, I will have to print this out and stare at it while I attempt to do it. Gimme some time and lemme see what happens. Thanks so much.
